For how I get them, its a mix of library and buying. If it's "dad lit" I try to just get it from the library, but not always.
As for how far in advance, every year I try to have some project. This year it was to read Homer, and all the other ancient works that include human characters from Homer, but other than that, I just follow my bliss.
